He was a native of Kiangsu province, and his style name was Ting-chih. He served as an administrative assistant in Ch'üan-chou, Fukien province from 1333–1334. He excelled in painting ink bamboo and studied Chao Meng-fu (1254-1322) of the Yüan dynasty and the famous Sung dynasty bamboo artist Wen T'ung.In this painting, there are three stalks of bamboo. A strong wind blows the leaves, and one can almost hear the whistling of the wind and the fluttering of leaves. There is a marked difference in ink tonality between the bamboo in the front and that in the back, as though a layer of mist shrouds the bamboo in the back, making it much lighter and more hazy. Though depicted with strong, hard, springy brushwork, the bamboo has a graceful and gentle appearance.
