A good landscape painter in the style of Shen Chou, he excelled at scenes of lakes, rivers and other large-scale compositions with vigor and coherence. In this painting, Hsieh has portrayed a lone boat returning from the mountains on a cold, wintry river. Series of peaks rise along both sides of the snowy river banks, where several dwellings are nestled. The artist has employed varying ink tones to describe water and sky, giving a chilling impression of winter’s crystalline desolation. This effect is a stark contrast to the powdery softness of accumulated snow on the irregular contours of the mountains, the silhouettes of which have been depicted by a “wrinkled” outline. Distinctive brushwork imbues this scene with an aura of an ancient and hoary time immemorial; the work is truly beautifully executed.
