The red of the flowers and the green of the leaves reflect one another; the “boneless” washes are radiant. Even the white unpainted background complements the peony’s loveliness. Lu Chih was from Wu County in Kiangsu. His style name was Shu-p’ing; his sobriquet, Pao-shan-tzu. As a person, Lu was noted for his filiality and integrity, and as a man of letters. He was famous not only as a painter but also as a poet, essayist, and calligrapher. Lu studied with Chu Yün-ming and Wen Cheng-ming. His paintings reflect a refined sense of style; his landscapes and depictions of flowers and birds are original.
