This small scene recalls the expression “when the granaries are full after the autumn harvest, you don’t need to worry about too many sparrows in the eaves.” Thus, this painting symbolizes an abundant harvest.Fine, yet forceful, brushwork is combined with a delicate sense of color to produce a work that reflects the elegant sophistication of the Imperial academy style of the Northern Sung (960-1127). This is the eleventh leaf from the album I-yüan ts’ang-chen. This album leaf traditionally has been attributed to Li Ti. Li served in the Imperial Painting Academy during the reigns of Kao-tsung, Hsiao-tsung, Kuang-tsung, and Ning-tsung (1162-1224). He attained the rank of Assistant Commissioner.
