Although this appears to be an ordinary scene, the artist has succeeded in imbuing a warm and peaceful feeling to the realistic forms of the delicate flowers and leaves as well as the colors of the blossoms. The almost circular formal suggests that it was once originally a round fan, which after being used for some time, was remounted as an album leaf. However, fan shapes have also long been admired and used directly as formats for painting and calligraphy. Ma K’uei was a court painter under Ning-tsung(r. 1194-1224) of the Southern Sung. He was the elder brother of the famous court paint Ma Yüan.
