Broken branches such as this constitute a distinct genre of Chinese flower painting. By focusing on this one stem, the artist has been able to minutely observe the flower and paint it in great detail. The hibiscus, also known as the marsh mallow, blossoms in late summer or early fall; it is one of the flowers symbolic of autumn.
