He is holding a sutra and observing attendants washing an elephant. In rendering the figures, the artist has captured the special characteristics of the Indian Buddhist deity and his retinue. The branches and leaves of the firmiana tree are flattened in an almost patternized manner to express a feeling of smoothness and control, supplementing the sober, dignified, stark beauty of the bodhisattva.
