According to the signature on this painting, “Ling-ch’üan Liu I,” his hometown would probably be ling-ch’ üan which was located in Shan-hsi province during the Ch’ing dynasty. Two dogs playing in the garden are depicted in lively fashion. One dog is concentrating on a little beetle, and the other one seems to be facinated by a beautiful butterfly. The objects in this picture are treated in a fine and delicate manner which is closely related to the Sung court style.
