He received the chin-shih degree in 1733; his fellow students recognized the breadth and extensiveness of his learning. During the Ch’ien-lung era (1736-1796) he was summoned to enter the palace and assisted in the compilation of the Shih-chü pao-chi, the Mi-tien chu-lin, and the Hsi-ch’ing ku-chien. This painting represents a river bank under overhanging cliffs with a mountain village and houses along a wide river. Behind the overhanging cliff is a continuous layer of hills across the horizon. On the river fishing boats in groups of twos and threes return to the village; two boats still in the distance slowly make their way toward the shore. The setting sun casts a red glow over the river. Both wet and dry strokes are used, creating an effect of strength and richness.
